Ivar Arosenius 1878-1909 is one of Sweden´s best loved artists. In his art and life he epitomized the eternal Bohemian who repudiates a bourgeois upbringing in favour of a more unconventional existence. His paintings are a celebration of his way of life. Depicted sometimes with humour and sometimes with bitter sarcasm. A haemophiliac at a time when medicine had not yet mastered the disease, he died at the early age of thirty-one. His best –known work is the Cat Journey, which he drew for his daughter Lillian.
The Arosenius Fund
The Arosenius Fund is named after the artist Ivar Arosenius, who had hemophilia and died in 1909 at a mere age of 31. The aim of the Arosenius Fund is to promote research in finding a cure for hemophilia. The current method of treatment only goes back a few decades and most countries do not even have access to this method. The dream is a cure for hemophilia based on the possibility of using gene therapy. The insertion of a healthy gene into the cells will enable the production of the blood clotting substance, which is lacking when one has hemophilia. It is a mind thrilling thought to cure hemophilia. By contributing to the Arosenius Fund, the dream of a cure for hemophilia can come true. The symbol of the fund “Lillan and the Cat” comes from the book “The Cat’s Journey” written by Ivar Arosenius.
The Arosenius fund was formed in 1996 and is the research fund of the Swedish Hemophilia Society. The Board of the fund consists of representatives from the fields of gene therapy and hemophilia care as well as members of the Society. The fund supports symposia, lectures, and research projects in order to reach the national and international research community.
